Medical Certificates/ Sick Leave Certificate for Absence from work (Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung)
In case you are not able to go to work because you are sick, you are required to present a sick leave certificate to your employer. With a sick leave certificate, your doctor or dentist confirms that you are sick and not able to go to work. This certificate can be obtained from the doctor, and you are required to send this sick leave certificate to your employer and your insurance company immediately, and not later than the third day of sick leave. This enables the employee to receive his full salary, and not have it deducted, even if he is not able to work for a certain period of time, i.e. up to a maximum of six weeks.
After these six weeks, an employee who is insured with the statutory health insurance (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) is entitled to receive about 70% of their last salary, paid by the insurance.
Medical Certificate/ Sick Leave Certificate for Exemption from Exams (Prüfungsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung)
If you are not able to attend an exam due to illness, you are required to submit a sick leave certificate (Prüfungsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung) to the appropriate examination office at your university. This certificate can be obtained from your doctor, who confirms that you are, in fact, sick and cannot take the exam.
Generally, you are required to pay a fee in order to be issued this certificate at the doctor’s. This fee may vary from doctor to doctor.
